چکیده
By G. BRECHER, M.D., K. M. ENDICOTT, M.D., H. GUMP, A.B., AND H. P. BRAWNER H EINEKE,’ investigating effects of x-rays on internal organs, found the lymphoid tissues peculiarly susceptible to irradiation. This observation suggested the possibility of studying the function of the lymphoid apparatus by observing animals deprived of their lymphoid tissue by means of selective injury by x-ray.2 For this purpose it is necessary to suppress lymphopoiesis without interfering with other bodily functions of the experimental animals used. Permanent destruction of the lymphoid tissues cannot be accomplished without deleterious effects upon other organs, as shown by Hughes and Job.3 However, with a single whole body irradiation of 400 r, Henshaw4 produced in albino mice marked temporary lymphopenia accompanied by only slight neutropenia and anemia. The dosage used by Henshaw thus appeared to produce the highly selective damage of lymphoid tissues necessary for functional studies of this system. The present study was undertaken to furnish further details of the selectivity of radiation injury produced with this dosage by measuring the initial damage to all blood forming tissues and the reticulo-endothelial system, the extent and duration of the suppression of their activity, and the rate of their recovery.

متن کاملAn Evaluation of Effects of Black Grape and Ginger Extracts on Hematological Alteration and Lipid Peroxidation of Hepatocyte in Irradiated Albino Mice
Introduction: Exposure to ionizing radiation can trigger adverse biological effects on healthy tissues, such as causing hematological toxicity and potential injury to different organs. Ionizing radiation has sufficient energy to liberate electrons from atoms leaving them with unpaired electrons; hence ionizing them and producing free radicals. In the current study, the...
متن کاملEffects of methylphenidate on the mice Adrenal glands and lymphoid organs: Results of histochemical, histometrical and histopathological investigations
BACKGROUND: Considering widely administration of methylphenidate and also its immunosuppressive effects on different organs, importance of related microscopic studies is obvious. OBJECTIVES: Determining histological effects of methylphenidate on adrenal glands and lymphatic organs in mice. METHODS: A total number of 30 adult male Balb/C mice were provided, weighed and divided into one control a...
متن کاملP-155: Studies of Cytotoxic Effects ofCdSe Quantum Dots on Fetal Development Testis and Epididymis in Albino Mice
Background: Quantum dots (QDs) are among the most promising items in the nanomedicine toolbox. These nanocrystal fluorophores have several potential medical applications including nanodiagnostics, imaging, targeted drug delivery, Nevertheless, in vivo cytotoxicity of these nanoparticles has not been highly considered. For this reason, the cytotoxic effects of CdSe QDs on testis and epididymis e...
متن کاملApplication of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) for differentiation between normal and cancerous breast tissues
ABSTRACT Background: Coherent scattering leads to diffraction effects and especially constructive interferences. Theseinterferences carry some information about the molecular structure of the tissue. As breast cancer isthe most widespread cancer in women, this project evaluated the application of small angleX-ray scattering (SAXS) for differentiation between normal and cancerous breast tissues....
